Concentration….say again?

concentration

In my out of work life I mix with a group of people that use the phrase ‘say again’ quite regularly. Is it a modern thing or the fact they engage in a lot of radio communication?

One thing is for sure, in a busy world concentration is under threat.

In the detailed article from the Guardian (see link below) they provide explanations for this and it is a fascinating read, but one of the techniques they discuss could be useful to many of us. The five more rule.

How often have we found ourselves drifting off so we have to utter ‘say again’ or have to start reading a page in a book or article ‘again’ after realizing we have gone a couple of pages without being able to remember what we have just apparently read.

If a book or article is hard to read or that last few yards of a run is too difficult we just give up. This technique just encourages us to try and read five more pages, or do five more minutes of exercise, to extend our focus and by persevering we may be able to improve our concentration.

A simple idea that could just help.
